Tanzanian Premier League - Matchday 28

2024/25 Tanzanian Premier League
Matchday 28

12-14 May 2025

There is still plenty to play for in the Tanzanian Premier League, with the title race potentially set to go down to the wire Pamba Jiji and Tanzania Prisons look to avoid the relegation playoffs.

Young Africans are in the driver's seat and they host Namungo at the KMC Stadium on Tuesday, May 13 looking to take a step closer to retaining their league crown.

Yanga beat Fountain Gate 4-0 on April 21 to extend their winning streak to eight matches while maintaining a seven-point lead over arch-rivals Simba at the summit.

Miloud Hamdi's side have only conceded 10 goals this season and that is largely down to Djigui Diarra, who has kept 14 clean sheets and is attracting interest from abroad.

However, Hamdi insists Diarra will not leave unless a suitable replacement is identified first, although he believes the Malian goalkeeper has the qualities to shine in Europe.

"Releasing Diarra is not as simple as it is being talked about," the French-born Algerian said. "Finding a goalkeeper of his caliber is very difficult. Everyone knows how important he has been to this team.

"If Diarra were to leave, I would only agree if we brought in the best possible replacement - because players like him are rare. Diarra's quality is undeniable. It's fortunate for Tanzanian football that a goalkeeper of his ability is playing here; he could easily compete in Europe."

Namungo (9th) have put some distance between themselves and the danger zone after embarking on a four-game unbeaten run, with a 2-1 win over Mashujaa on April 20 taking them four points clear of Pamba Jiji (13th).

Simba could cut the gap at the top of the table to just one point by the time they entertain Singida Black Stars at the KMC Stadium on Wednesday, May 14.

The Reds of Msimbazi made it four wins on the spin when they beat JKT Tanzania 1-0 on May 5 and they will play two catch-up games against Pamba Jiji and Kinondoni FC before the visit of Black Stars.

Fadlu Davids' side also have the CAF Confederation Cup final to look forward to and the South African tactician has challenged his players to remain focused on the immediate task at hand as he looks to keep them fresh in the pursuit of two trophies.

"Squad rotation is important because we are facing a tight run of back-to-back matches," Davids said.

"I've said it before, games in hand are not points in hand. You have to fight for every match to get the three points. I'm happy to see my players giving their all and achieving our targets."

Singida Black Stars are locked in a fierce battle with Azam for the final African berth and a 3-0 success against Tabora United on April 19 kept them in touching distance of Azam, who currently occupy third place.

Meanwhile, Azam will be looking to finish the season strongly as they prepare to welcome Dodoma Jiji to the Azam Complex Stadium on Tuesday, May 13.

The Bakers halted a two-match losing streak with a 4-2 triumph over Kagera Sugar on April 19 to stay just ahead of Black Stars in the race to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Dodoma Jiji saw a three-game unbeaten run come to an end following a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Kinondoni FC on April 18, but they trail Tabora United by just three points in sixth place and could still finish at high as fifth.

Elsewhere, Pamba Jiji will be desperate for all three points when they travel to the Sokoine Stadium for a clash with rock-bottom KenGold on Tuesday, May 13.

A 1-1 draw with Fountain Gate on April 8 made it three games without defeat for Wana Tipilindanda and lifted them up to 13th spot, two points shy of safety.

KenGold's relegation has already been confirmed as they've only collected 16 points and there are just nine more on offer and the gap to Tanzania Prisons (14th) stands at 11.

The encounter with Coastal Union at the Sokoine Stadium on Monday, May 12 will be equally important for Tanzania Prisons are they seek a fourth win on the spin.

Prisons beat JKT Tanzania 3-2 on April 18 to take them within two points of Fountain Gate (12th), while Coastal Union (8th) are also on the up after they recorded back-to-back wins against Singida Black Stars and KenGold.
