2026 World Cup
Quarterfinal
Argentina v Switzerland
Sunday 12 July
03:00
Kansas City Stadium
Argentina will look to keep their World Cup title defence on track when they face Switzerland in the last Quarterfinal, set for the Kansas City Stadium on the morning of Sunday 12 July. Kick-off at 03:00.
Current form
Argentina surged into the Quarterfinals in dramatic style, coming from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta. La Albiceleste were staring early elimination in the face after Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko put the Pharaohs 2-0 up with three quarters of regulation time played.
But Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi levelled the game with goals in the 79th and 83rd minutes respectively, before Enzo Fernandez headed the winner two minutes into injury time to seal an amazing victory for the reigning champions.
Switzerland’s progression to a first Quarterfinal since 1954 was less spectacular but equally tense. The Nati held Colombia to a goalless stalemate in Vancouver over 120 minutes, before winning 4-3 on penalties.
The European side’s organisation and discipline were fundamental to success, and they will need to repeat that if they are to have a chance of upsetting Argentina.
Team news
Argentina’s squad is mostly injury free, with the only worry being over Leonardo Balerdi (calf issue).
Switzerland will hope to have key attacker Johan Manzambi back from a knee issue, while Michel Aebischer and Luca Jaquez are managing muscle injuries.
Quotes
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni
“For all of us who played soccer for 20 years, to feel what we felt [against Egypt] again is incredible. I think most coaches who played soccer become coaches because of days like this, because of those emotions, that adrenaline. I always felt the game was on our side. Beyond the result, I don't think the team was playing badly. We had chances.”
Switzerland coach Murat Yakin
“I think the effort with the entire qualification and the whole preparation for this World Cup was all worth it. Much has worked out, including the way we played. We set ourselves the goal. Every small puzzle piece fit together from the first phase of this tournament. We have improved.”
Head-to-head
Argentina and Switzerland have met in seven previous matches, with La Albiceleste boasting an unbeaten record (five wins, two draws). The teams have met in two previous World Cup matches: a group stage match in 1966 won 2-0 by Argentina, and a Round of 16 clash in 2014 which the South Americans took 1-0 after extra time, thanks to a 118th minute strike from Angel Di Maria.
