TPL - Kagera Sugar chase first win of the season

2026/27 Tanzanian Premier League

Matchday 6

11-16 September

Tanzania Premier League strugglers Kagera Sugar will chase first win of the season when they host Fountain Gate on Sunday in one of seven Matchday 6 fixtures played over the weekend and into next midweek.

Kagera have claimed just one point from five league outings in 2026/27, most recently suffering a 2-0 loss at home to Azam FC on 31 August, while Fountain have fared only a little better, picking up one win so far.

Kagera Sugar coach Juma Kaseja has identified the defence as a key area for improvement: “We continue to correct the mistakes. Some are individual and others are collective, and we have started taking steps to address them,” he explained.

“The pressure on us is great from the fans, leaders, technical bench and players after not getting a win, but we are going to correct ourselves and improve so that we can be better in the next matches.”

The weekend’s action opens on Friday with Dodoma Jiji v Namungo, before Saturday features Mbeya City looking to build on their strong start to the season (three wins from five matches) when they travel to face Polisi Tanzania, as well as Coastal Union hosting JKT Tanzania.

Sunday, aside from the Kagera v Gate clash, also brings a battle between Pamja Jiji and TRA United.

The next midweek features the heavyweights of the TPL (who are absent this weekend due to CAF Club commitments), as Young Africans host Geita Gold on Tuesday 15 September, before Azam FC and Simba SC meet the following day.

Simba coach Steve Barker has called for his team to step up a level despite their good showing in the Champions League against Mighty Wanderers of Malawi.

“What we need to do is prepare ourselves to play according to our philosophy and look for another victory," the South African tactician said.

"It was not an easy first leg. We beat a team that played well and gave us a strong challenge. We are still not certain of qualifying because anything can happen.”
