What Are the AFCON Qualifiers?

The Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers are the matches that determine which national teams earn a place at the next AFCON tournament. Teams from across the continent compete in qualifying groups, with each nation aiming to collect enough points to secure progression.

The qualification campaign is often filled with unforgettable moments, dramatic results, and surprise performances. For many nations, qualifying for AFCON represents an opportunity to showcase their talent on one of football's biggest international stages and compete against Africa's finest teams.

AFCON Qualifiers Format Explained

The qualification process is designed to test consistency, resilience, and quality over a series of matches rather than a single knockout fixture.

Group Stage Competition

Teams are divided into qualification groups and face the other nations within their group. The objective is simple: earn points and finish in a qualifying position.

Each group presents a unique challenge, often combining experienced football nations with ambitious teams looking to make history. This creates a competitive environment where no fixture can be taken lightly.

Home and Away Fixtures

The qualifiers are played on a home-and-away basis, giving teams the opportunity to compete in front of their own supporters while also testing themselves in challenging away environments.

Home advantage can play a significant role during qualification, but successful teams are usually those capable of securing valuable results both at home and on the road.

The Importance of Points

Every fixture contributes to the qualification standings. Wins, draws, and goal difference can all have a major impact on the final group rankings, making every matchday crucial.

As the campaign progresses, qualification races often become increasingly intense as teams battle for the remaining places at AFCON PAMOJA 2027.
