2024/25 Tanzanian Premier League
Matchday 1
16-18 August 2024
The new
Tanzanian Premier League season gets underway on the third weekend of August, with Simba looking to halt Young Africans' run of three consecutive titles.
Simba will begin their quest for the trophy when they welcome Tabora United to the KMC Stadium on Sunday, August 18.
The Msimbazi Reds lost just three of their 30 games last term, but it was only good enough for third place as they finished 11 points adrift of arch-rivals Young Africans.
Fadlu Davids was brought in as head coach last month after catching the eye under Josef Zinnbauer at Raja Casablanca in 2023-24 and his tenure began with a 1-0 defeat to Yanga in the Community Shield on August 8.
Davids was buoyed by the performance of his players, given the short time he has worked with them and believes Simba will get stronger as the campaign progresses.
"Fantastic [performance]. Of course, we can't maintain our playing style. That's clear after four weeks, and I don't expect them to," the South African tactician told FARPost.
"Yanga is a team that has been together for three years. We're a team that is four weeks together. But it didn't look like it; it looks like we played really, really well in certain moments.
"It's just about maintaining the playing style, but that will come with the fitness of the team, and we will get stronger match by match."
Tabora United had to navigate the playoffs after finishing in the bottom four last season, although they retained their top-flight status by beating JKT Tanzania and Biashara United.
The domestic action kicks off on Friday, August 16, with newcomers Pamba Jiji hosting Tanzania Prisons at the CCM Kirumba Stadium.
Tanzania Prisons had to settle for a ninth-placed finish in 2023-24 after they endured a poor run-in which saw then go winless in their last 11 games.
Then on Saturday, August 17, Mashujaa get their campaign up and running against Dodoma Jiji at the Lake Tanganyika Stadium.
Mashujaa enjoyed a strong finish to last season, winning four of their final five matches to secure eighth position. Dodoma Jiji avoided the playoffs by the skin of their teeth as they lost three of their last four games to finish one point ahead of JKT Tanzania in 12th spot.
Namungo will be hoping to build on an impressive finish in 2023-24 when they lock horns with Fountain Gate at the Majaliwa Stadium.
The Southern Killers went unbeaten in their last five matches to surge up to sixth in the standings, three points clear of Fountain Gate, who limped to an 11th-placed finish after losing three of their final five outings.
Sunday also sees two newly-promoted teams in action as KenGold take on Singida Black Stars at the Sokoine Stadium.
